Calgary man and son rescued from sea

The local man, rescued at sea with his son, is sharing their harrowing tale.

The boy, his dad and his uncle were rescued by the crew of a container ship after their sailboat ran into trouble in rough seas during a trip from Mexico to Hawaii.

Thirty-two-year-old Brad James tells 660News his first priority was making sure his nine-year-old son, West, was safe. It took him some time to calm the boy down and convince him they would be rescued.

When he was pulled from the water, James says he was so happy, he cried.

“There were like 30 people on the crew and half are on watch at a time but everyone was awake, it was close to four in the morning at this point.  It was like going through a gauntlet of happiness, a grown man crying. It was just incredible,” said James.

His brother was rescued almost immediately, as Brad and West drifted away from the ship.
