Changes to student aid program

The Redford government is making it easier to apply for and get a student loan for post secondary education.
The Minister of Advanced Education says a flat rate contribution of $1,500 is being introduced August 1st which means earnings, RRSP’s and parental income will no longer be considered. That flat rate will not be required from single parents wanting to get a post secondary education.
“We don’t want costs preventing Alberta students from pursuing their dreams,” said Greg Weadick. “Budget 2012 reflects our ongoing commitment to making post-secondary education accessible and affordable and to encouraging graduates to make their degree work right here in Alberta.”
Grants will be given out when students graduate and for specific programs, a retention grant of $1,000 will be offered for those who work in Alberta for at least three years in their field.
