Looking for love on Valentine’s Day?
You might consider one of the local animal shelters, where — unlike many other Valentine’s Day activities in which prices often seem pricier that day — the love of a pet can be had for less than usual.
The City of Calgary, Alberta Animal Rescue (AARC), MEOW Foundation and Pound Rescue are all lowering their adoption fees. And, for every dog adoption AARC or Pound Rescue processes, they’re offering six training lessons for $100.
“I have 28 cats, gorgeous cats available,” Bill Bruce, the Director of Calgary’s Animal Services tells 660News. “AARCS has six. MEOW’s got about 88 cats available. Pound Rescue I think has a hundred. And these are all highly socialized domestic animals.”
“So it’s half price,” Bruce says referring to the cost of adopting a pet on Valentine’s Day. (It’s) “definitely better for them to be out in a family home than sitting in shelter, which you know, as much as you try to make it nice it’s still not a home.”
Bruce adds they want to remove some of the financial barriers towards owning a pet, but cautions that they shouldn’t be purchased as a gift unless you’re absolutely sure the recipient wants and can care for the animal.
