While the Calgary Zoo’s already planning for the 2018 arrival of two giant pandas on loan from China, animal advocate groups are wary of the deal.
The campaign director for the national animal protection charity Zoocheck Canada tells The Calgary Herald, the organization doesn’t think the $1-million per year zoos will have to pay to host the bears is a good deal.
Julie Woodyer says zoos should invest in improving existing facilities instead.
Calgary Zoo President Clement Lanthier tells the paper the fee is appropriate, and they’ll have no problem making up the cost as visitors swarm to see the black and white star attractions.
The Chinese charge the lending fee to pay for panda conservation research.
