Ice safety tips for Calgarians

The Calgary Fire Department is reminding people to stay off of lakes, reservoirs and rivers.
Due to the city’s unseasonably warm weather the ice is thinning and rotting, something Battalion Chief Ernie Molineaux tells 660News makes it extremely dangerous to walk or skate on.
“There is a current underneath so it will sweep you underneath the ice where you’ve fallen through. There is no way of getting you out at that point, so it’s very dangerous,” Molineaux says.
If you do happen to witness an ice accident on a person or pet, don’t attempt a rescue, rather stay back and call 9-1-1.
The Fire Department hasn’t had to rescue anyone who’s broken through the ice so far this year but have had to remove people caught walking on lake, river and reservoir ice.
