EDMONTON – The Alberta government is promising new legislation to improve private property rights and to address complaints about lack of compensation and access to the courts.
Environment Minister Diana McQueen says the law would also create a property rights advocate who would help landowners get answers and action from the government.
McQueen announced the proposed law in the house during question period, but didn’t say when it will be introduced.
The bill comes after a government panel chaired by McQueen held open houses in 10 communities to get feedback on current land-use legislation
It has been criticized heavily for giving cabinet too much power to cancel private leases and rights in the name of public planning.
The legislation has already been amended, but many landowners have said it is fatally flawed and must be repealed.
