A true Canadian hero dropped the puck during a ceremonial opening face-off at the Saddledome Saturday night before the Flames and Philadelphia Flyers squared off.
The guest of honour was Rick Hansen who’s spending the weekend in Calgary to mark the 25th anniversary of his Man in Motion tour which raised awareness of spinal cord injuries.
It was a neutral site game for Hansen who admits he’s a fan of his hometown team. That would be — here in Calgary — the much despised Vancouver Canucks. But Hansen proudly points out he’s had the opportunity to wear the jerseys of every Canadian NHL team at some point.
Unfortunately Hansen’s appearance at the Dome failed to inspire the Flames — who are in a tight race for a playoff spot — to victory. They dropped a 5-4 shootout decision to the visiting Flyers.
Sunday, it’s a different venue for the Man in Motion. Hansen will be on hand for a celebration taking place at the BMO Centre starting at 2:30 p.m..
