Changes needed to election process – advocacy group

A democracy advocacy group is calling for changes to the province’s election process.
The Calgary-based “Foundation for Democratic Advancement” gives Alberta’s funding laws and electoral system a barely-passing grade of 54-per cent.
The group says donation laws in the province favour big-business and wealthy candidates.
It points-out single donations can run as high as $30,000 while there is no campaign spending limit on those running for office.
The Calgary Sun reports the ruling Tories gathered 36-per cent more campaign funding than all other parties combined during the 2008 election.
