The Alberta government is declaring an early start to the forest fire season over concerns that low snow levels have left northern forests dangerously dry.
Alberta Sustainable Resource Development Minister Frank Oberle says they’ll start readying fire crews and equipment at the beginning of March instead of April this year.
“Last year, like no other, we saw how destructive wildfires can be. We are committed to protecting people and property,” he said.
Officials say this winter’s snowpack is about half the normal depth, leaving almost the entire northeast corner of the province at high risk for early season wildfires.
