Calgarians should be allowed to keep chickens in their homes if they choose to.
That’s the message former Calgary mayoral candidate Paul Hughes delivered to a provincial court judge Monday as he tried to overturn a six-year-old city bylaw.
He said the law restricting the ownership of chickens for food was based on health, welfare and safety, but that there’s no basis for the law.
Hughes says owning chickens improves his health and welfare, and points out dogs are far more dangerous in a household.
