The zoo to welcome baby elephant

The Calgary Zoo will welcome a new elephant early next year.

Asian elephants, Rani and Spike, are expecting!

Spokesperson Trish Exton-Parder tells 660News, this is wonderful news for this particular species.

“They’re an extremely endangered animal so breeding programs are critical for Asian elephants, so for us to be able to have a hopeful offspring is very exciting for us,” said Exton-Parder.

Mom-to-be, Rani, is 21 years old, and zoo officials say that she’s at the perfect age for breeding.
