A video released by a charity organization in the U.S. has exploded on the internet and is trending on Twitter.
The film highlights the exploits of Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony and has been viewed on YouTube over 7 million times in the last 48 hours.
It ranked higher than the new iPad or Peyton Manning on Wednesday.
Twitter’s top trends more commonly include celebrities than fugitive militants.
Kony is the leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda and is renowned for forcing children into becoming soldiers.
The half hour film called “Kony 2012”, was created by the U.S. charity “Invisible Children” in southern California and tells the story of a child soldier named Jacob and how the charity wants the U.S. to take action to stop the l.R.A.
Critics are questioning the accuracy of the information in the video and say the idea of trying to use viral marketing to gain popular opinion and incite military intervention is very dangerous because people could die as a result.
Kony was indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court in 2005, but has yet to be captured.
