Avalanche claims another life inf B.C. backcountry

REVELSTOKE, B.C. – The RCMP is reporting yet another fatal avalanche in B.C.’s backcountry.

The Mounties say a slide Sunday afternoon buried a backcountry skier in the Ghost Peak area, south of Revelstoke.

A news release says other members of the group were able to locate the skier using a search beacon and dig him out, but once search and rescue crews arrived, the skier was dead.

Police say crews are waiting until high winds and avalanche conditions improve before removing the skier’s body.

The skier’s name hasn’t been released.

It’s the second reported avalanche death since Friday.

Steven Burke from Red Deer was the victim of a snow slide in southeastern BC last week.

The 33-year-old was with a group of six snowmobilers sledding in the area that was under a special avalanche warning.
