A man killed by an avalanche while back country skiing Sunday was from Calgary.
The 33-year-old’s fellow skiers were finally airlifted off the side of a mountain Tuesday afternoon after spending two nights camped out because of poor weather. Four of the men are from Calgary, one from Fernie and RCMP say all were experienced back country skiers and had skied with each other for years.
Staff Sergeant Jaquie Olsen says they are being interviewed.
The Calgary man is the second from Alberta to be killed in a BC avalanche in the past week. A man from the Red Deer area was buried in a slide while snowmobiling near Sparwood Friday.
Sergeant Olsen advises back country users to check with the Canadian Avalanche Centre before heading out and to travel with proper equipment.
Sunday’s slide buried struck in the Ghost Peak area near Revelstoke. Other members of the group were able to locate the skier using a search beacon and dig him out, but he could not be revived.
