HerWorld conference gets underway

DeVry Institute of Technology is hosting a conference to inspire high school girls to pursue careers in science, technology and engineering.
A recent survey revealed 70 per cent of Calgarians believe there’s a siginificant gender gap in the tech sector.
More than 130 students are taking part in the first annual ‘HerWorld’ conference Tuesday at the Telus Spark.
The young women will take part in hands-on workshops and hear from successful women in the tech sector.
DeVry’s Anila Umar hopes it will increase the students’ interest in science and tech careers.
“I really hope that they go home with a sense that there isn’t any career or any opportunity that is too out of reach for them, that they can reach for the sky and that they can actually accomplish it,” says Umar.
Lieutenant Colonel Maryse Carmichael literally reached for the sky. The first female commander of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds will give the closing address.
