Auto sales revved up

The latest offerings from the auto industry are shined-up and on display at the BMO Centre at Stampede Park as the 32nd Annual Calgary International Auto Show gears up.
The show opens with a great deal of optimism among auto makers after a strong start to the year.
Michael Hatch is the chief economist with the Canadian Automobile Dealers Sssociation and tells 660News, January and February were absolutely huge for the car market in Canada, with a 13 per cent jump in sales over last year.
“So obviously that bodes very well. It’s too early to say whether or not it’s going to continue for the rest of the year. It’ll be very difficult for the rest of the year to continue at that elevated level but it definitely bodes well for better growth this year than last,” says Hatch.
Hes says sales last year were up by about two per cent, with similar growth expected coming into this year. However, the unexpected spike in the first two months of 2012 have observers looking closely at what happens in March as a key indicator for the rest of the year.
