Ottawa takes action to combat elder abuse

The Federal Justice Minister has unveiled new legislation that will change the criminal code aimed at combating elder abuse.

Once someone is convicted of a crime, a judge may soon have more things to consider when handing out their punishment.

This bill would make age, health and financial situation aggravating factors in a crime.

That means if you target people like seniors, your going to get a harsher sentence.

The Justice Minister hopes the changes will bring greater consistency across the country when courts deal with elder abuse cases.

It’s believed one in ten seniors are abused in some form or another, but it often goes unreported.
