The always fun topic of taxes is due to come up Monday at City Council.
Back in the fall, council approved a 6 per cent tax hike for 2012. But with the province asking for 7.2 per cent more in revenue, the city’s portion of the tax bill will increase by another half per cent.
Ward 10 Alderman Andre Chabot says if council moves a little money around, ratepayers won’t have to bear the increase.
“Keep $10 million that we put in to our coffers for debt reduction,” Chabot tells 660News, “and use another $5 million to offset the half per cent and keep it at 6” (percent). “I think we can keep it at 6 per cent. I see no reason why not.”
Otherwise the tax bill for city property owners will jump from 6 per cent to 6.5 per cent for the current tax year, putting the average tax bill increase for the 2012 at just over $150.
