Canada’s inflation rate rises to 2.6 per cent

Statistics Canada says the inflation rate has risen to 2.6 per cent for the month of February, numbers not seen since December 2008.
The big mover was gasoline, which rose 2.6 per cent from January and was 8.9 per cent higher than one year ago.
Food also increased at elevated rates, up 4.1 per cent from last year.
Overall, prices increased in seven of eight major components, with recreation, education and reading bucking the trend.
Alberta also saw a large dip in inflation compared to other parts of the country.
The province fell a full percentage point to sit at 1.9 per cent from 2.9 the month before.
Numbers on a local level also dropped, with inflation sitting in Calgary at 1.7 per cent, compared to 2.8 in the month of January.
Overall, the cost of consumer goods rose by 0.1 per cent in February.
