Peace Bridge opens!

Calgary’s dignitaries have officially unveiled the Peace Bridge after a long and controversial wait for the projects completion.

The launch kicked off on the south side of the bridge and bagpipers from the Scottish Tradition School of Piping and local veterans led a parade of stilt walkers, pedestrians and cyclists across the bridge to officially mark the opening.

The bright red bridge is 6.2 metres wide, which is twice as wide as any other city pedestrian bridge, is 130 metres long and is composed of over 700 tonnes of steel.

Dressed in red to show their support, thousands of Calgarians came together to celebrate its opening.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi who has not always supported $24.5 million dollar project, addressed the crowd to thank those who made it happen.

“Standing at this angle or indeed any angle in the city, that, that bridge is a feat of engineering, architecture and it must be said, of beauty.”

People began lining up well over an hour before the launch just to be among the first to walk across.
