Three killed in deadly night on Calgary streets

It was a tragic night on Calgary streets Sunday; three people were killed and four others injured in a trio of collisions.
The crashes, happening all within 90 minutes, were in dark, remote locations of the city posing a challenge for investigators.
It began just after 9:00 p.m., when a man in his twenties was struck and killed by a passenger bus while walking along the side of Highway 1 at Valley Ridge Blvd N.W.
EMS pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
Duty Inspector Paul Stacey tells 660News the driver and vehicle were both found a short time later.
“The bus was located by an RCMP officer in Canmore,” says Stacey. “He stopped the bus and noticed some damage to it, he notified us and as a result we now have the driver.”
Stacey says the driver appears to have noticed he hit something but it’s unclear if he realized it was a person. There’s no word yet on any charges.
Police were then called to 17th Avenue and 100 Street S.E. less than 30 minutes later to reports of a fiery head-on collision.
Investigators say two pick-up trucks collided, killing a 70-year-old female passenger on impact.
A man and two children in the same vehicle were rushed to hospital.
“There are some pretty serious injuries,” says Stacey. “STARS had to airlift one of the children to Alberta Children’s Hospital while everyone else was transported by ground ambulance; it looks like everyone is in non-life threatening condition.”
The driver of the other vehicle is in custody and charges are pending; investigators believe alcohol was a factor.
Police will also be looking at whether the headlights of the vehicles were turned on and whether or not one vehicle was heading the wrong way.
At 10:30 p.m. on nearby Hubalta Road S.E., police say a 56-year-old man was struck and killed by a pick-up truck.
There isn’t a crosswalk at the scene and alcohol has been ruled out. His name will not be released until after police notify his next of kin.
The crashes, in close proximity, left authorities short-handed, which forced them to call in extra resources as they investigated the scenes.
