Calgary pays tribute to legend

Legendary Canadian country music artist Ian Tyson has been immortalized on Calgary’s downtown C-train line.

The lyrics to the Tyson song ‘Land of Shining Mountains’ have been inscribed in a wall on the corner of 7th Avenue and 10th Street S.W.

Public art has been incorporated into the facelift of, what some call, ‘Transit Avenue’ and this piece will bring pure cowboy poetry to workers and visitors for years to come.

On hand for the unveiling in Calgary on Wednesday, Tyson said he is truly honoured.

“This is a wonderful thing for me and it’s so cool for me to see that back there.  I’m trying to remember when I wrote the song and I couldn’t possibly imagine that it was going to be set in a way that it has been and it’s even in my handwriting.  I can’t believe it,” says Tyson.

For the record, he wrote the song in 2005.

Alderman Druh Farrell was behind the tribute.

She says the lyrics speak to Alberta and urban life at the same time.
