Teachers erase parking fees

A plan to charge public school teachers for school parking has run into some opposition.

The Calgary Board of Education hoped to charge teachers $165 a year for a parking spot.

Officials planned to raise almost $1-million to help offset the CBE’s $19-million budget gap.

But it turns out the teachers’ collective agreement states they cannot be charged for a basic parking spot.

CBE spokesman Richard Peter tells The Calgary Herald a recent survey of schools suggested 87 per cent were in favour of charging teachers, but he admits the information came from administrators and not from teachers.
