Record haul at Tarp Auction

A new record was set at this year’s Stampede Tarp Auction.
Just over $4-million was raised; topping the record setting 2007 total by almost $12-thousand.
The top bid went to 12 time champion of the Rangeland Derby, Kelly Sutherland, who got a whopping $300,000 for his tarp.
He says it’s a much needed cash injection for all the teams.
“My son Mark and I have 82 head of thoroughbreds and that’s what we need to compete at the level of the Calgary Stampede,” says Sutherland. “I don’t need to tell anybody what it costs to train and maintain roughly 80 heads of thoroughbreds for roughly 150 days.”
Shaw GMC proved itself very loyal again this year, paying $135-thousand for Jason Glass’ tarp.
It’s the 22nd year in a row the two have hooked up on a tarp.
