New software dreamed-up by University of Calgary engineers can detect the early signs of breast cancer and could also hold the key to recognizing other cancers.
The team assessed mammogram images that were given a pass but later turned out to be positive for breast cancer and examined them again.
Researchers were able to identify suspicious areas that were missed in the first screening, on average, 15 months before lumps or other signs of cancer developed.
They call the abnormalities “architectural distortions” in the mammogram images which cannot always be spotted by medical doctors.
The U of C engineers hope to one day partner with a computer diagnostics company, but the software requires further testing before it can be used in a lab setting.
