Three year old dies after falling through ice with sister

The younger of two sisters who fell through the ice on a pond on Good Friday is reported to have died.
The pair had been playing on their family’s rural property near Penhold, southwest of Red Deer, just before 10:30 a.m. Friday.
The girls, ages three and five, were pulled from the water by family members and airlifted to hospital by STARS to Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Hospital.
The last official word from RCMP was that they were in critical condition.
However, media reports Saturday evening indicated the younger of the girls had died and that the older child was still critical.
A news release has stated the RCMP would no longer comment on the condition of the children, out of respect for the family.
RCMP Spokeswoman Doris Stapleton told 660News Friday that these types of tragic accidents are more common this time of year due to the unsettled weather conditions.
“It always seems that we get into the spring season when the ice is getting a little thin and soft, and we do experience an issue. It’s just totally tragic,” said Stapleton.
