Canadians saltier than the rest

A new study by the Canadian Medical Association Journal has revealed some unsettling numbers about salt intake and its effect on your body.

An international team of researchers looked at the salt content in more than 2,100 food products at six different restaurant chains and found salt levels in Canada and the U.S. contained much higher levels of sodium, than the same food being sold in France and the U.K..

Dr. Norm Campbell is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Calgary and tells 660News salt truly is a silent killer.

“Salt is estimated to kill about 14,000 Canadians a year, 40,000 hospitalizations, two million Canadians with hyper tension because of high salt and it threatens the sustainability of our health care system,” says
Dr. Campbell.

Most of the people 660News spoke with said they’re not surprised to learn that many Canadian and American foods contain more salt than fast food chains in the U.K. where government keeps a watchful eye on sodium levels.

The one thing that did seem to surprise people is that a salad, although it sounds healthy, can sometimes contain more salt than the average size of a small French fries.
