Calgary surgeon heads to Africa

A Calgary surgeon is paying his own way to help people in West Africa.

Dr. Andrew Kirkpatrick is departing May 17th for a two-week placement aboard the Africa Mercy, a ferry converted into a medical facility.

The ferry is a part of the Mercy Ships organization which takes volunteers to provide medical services and training for less fortunate people around the world.

Kirkpatrick tells The Calgary Sun he was inspired to take the journey because some of his colleagues have done it and because he has wanted to return to Africa since being a medical student in Sierra Leone.
