Red Deer County considers tax increase

Calgarians are not the only ones getting hit with an increase to their taxes.

Red Deer County Council is mulling over a two per cent increase to municipal tax rates for 2012.

County spokesperson Heather Gray tells 660News, council is considering the hike to compensate for rising prices and an aggressive 2012 work program in place for aging roads and infrastructure.

She says Red Deer County is being accountable for the taxpayer’s dollars and are spending money in areas important to them.

She adds, a recent survey means they have heard from residents and know what their needs are and their higher priorities.

Gray says council has been able to meet demands for local infrastructure so far while also keeping costs down and they do have healthy reserves in place if needed.

The bylaw will get a second and third reading on May 11th, tax notices will go out on May 13th with the deadline to pay set for the end of June.
