After numerous cases of debris falling or dangling from high rises and buildings under construction in Calgary, the city has implemented a public protection site safety plan.
Starting Tuesday, May 1, 2012, companies have to send in a plan that outlines steps they are going to take to ensure public safety during and after construction.
“These plans are intended to ensure the public is protected around construction sites at all times,” says Building Regulations Manager Kevin Griffiths. “We have worked closely with the construction industry in Calgary to determine plan requirements and to develop a review process.”
The plan applies to projects five or more stories high or any building designated by the Alberta government as being a high building.
In 2009, three-year-old Michelle Krsek died after being hit with material from a downtown highrise.
