Two people have been killed after a pair of deadly crashes on area roads in less than an hour.
The first happened north of Calgary around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday; a Pontiac Sunfire, travelling east along Highway 567, swerved into the path of a transport truck.
The car burst into flames and Mounties believe the driver, a 50-year-old Calgary man, was killed instantly.
Investigators kept the highway west of Symons Valley Road closed for several hours as officers reconstructed the scene.
The driver of the truck wasn’t injured.
About thirty minutes later, RCMP was called to the Trans-Canada Highway and Paradise Road near Chestermere.
Strathmore RCMP believes a white Toyota was travelling northbound when it entered the intersection and was struck by a utility van.
One child from the rear seat was ejected from the car and transported to a Calgary Hospital by STARS Air Ambulance, while a second was pronounced dead at the scene.
An EMS spokesperson tells 660News a third child and two women inside the car all sustained “massive, traumatic injuries.”
The three children were all between the ages of 5 and 8.
Adam Loria says the scene was a difficult one for anyone to witness, especially for those with young children at home.
“Not only for emergency providers or the paramedics involved but also for people who witnessed the accident or who stopped to render aid,” says Loria.
He says staff will be given some time off to cope with responding to the scene and they will determine whether a further debriefing is necessary.
The driver of the van was shaken but otherwise okay.
Eastbound Highway 1 was closed for several hours while police investigated the crash.
