Report recommends radical pay changes for MLAs

EDMONTON – A report has recommended a radically simplified pay structure for Alberta MLAs that could result in a pay cut for most of them.
Retired judge John Major says Alberta should scrap the base salary with extra pay for committees, with a single paycheque of $134,000.
Major says that’s about middle of the pack compared with other legislators in Canada.
But government documents suggest the current average, when all benefits and extra payments are included, is about $160,000.
Major also recommended the Speaker of House, cabinet ministers and the leader of the Opposition receive an extra $67,000.
The base salary for Alberta politicians is $78-thousand — the second lowest in Canada.
But Alberta pays its politicians extra for additional duties such as sitting on committees.
Premier Alison Redford’s salary is currently $211,000 — the highest of any provincial premier.
Major is also recommending a raise for the premier this year to $268,000, then hiked next year to $301,500, and in 2014, be $335,000.
