There’s a new organ donation feature on Facebook that encourages users in the U.S. and the U.K. to sign up to help people who need life-saving transplants.
While it has yet to launch in Canada, the Canadian Transplant Association’s Kathy Tachynski says Canadian Blood Services is in the planning process of setting up a national organ registry to help save lives, but it’s not the only way to help people.
“A national organ donor registry is definitely one way we can get there, but it’s not the only way,” she says. “There’s talking about it; there’s bringing awareness.”
She says it’s critical for Albertans to talk with their families about their wishes to donate, because signing the back of your Alberta Health Care card may not be enough in the absence of a provincial registry.
