Nearly 2,000 people rallied in Fort McMurray Saturday, demanding the province quickly finish twinning a dangerous highway that was the scene of a horrific crash.
Seven people were killed in the crash on Highway #63, the main route between Edmonton and the oilsands capital.
One of the organizers, Ashley St. Croix, says she’s never seen the community come together like it did Saturday.
“I’m blown away at what’s happened here today and the support from the community. You know, there was some sorrow, there was some anger, there was a lot of I think grieving for the community. And I think at the end of it, we ended on a high note,” she adds.
A convoy of buses arrived to represent each one of the victims plus an eight bus for the unborn child of one of the victims.
The woman who had been carrying the child was an employee of Diversified Transportation, the company which supplied the buses.
The province announced in 2006 it was going to twin the 240 km stretch of road, but only 33 km have been constructed so far.
Many people at the rally carried signs reading, “Pray for me, I drive 63.”
