ATA wants stable funding from province

One of the first matters Alison Redford attended to after taking office as Premier last fall was to restore funding cuts to education.

Now the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) wants to make sure that funding keeps pace with inflation.

At its annual conference this past weekend here in Calgary, the ATA passed a resolution calling on the province to tie the annual per-student grants to the rate of inflation.

The teachers association notes the government has built in a 5 per cent increase for student funding over the next three years, even though the government’s own estimate for inflation during that period is 7.1 per cent.

ATA President Carol Henderson tells the Calgary Herald:  “Anytime you fund less than inflation, it’s a cut.”

The ATA wasn’t only concerned with funding for schools during its weekend meeting.  It also passed a resolution calling for the establishment of fully funded, all-day kindergarten. It was a policy platform for Premier Redford when she was running for the PC party leadership.  Now the teacher’s association wants the Redford government to take action.
