SAIT Polytechnic has received almost $800,000 in funding for a Green Building Technologies Research Lab, big enough to house a two story home in which to do controlled environmental testing.
SAIT’s Director of Applied Research, Dr. Alex Zahavich says the program will “focus on the design, construction and living in of Net Zero homes that produce enough energy to operate off the grid.”
The new lab will be built from reclaimed shipping containers, designed for flexibility and sustainability and include a green roof and collection basin for research on rain water harvesting and reuse.
The facility, which SAIT plans to have operational by September, will be situated along the Trans-Canada Highway on their main campus.
