Water purchase plan review

City plans to purchase tens-of-thousands of bottles of water are not going down well with everyone.

Alderman Druh Farrell tells the Calgary Sun before awarding a contract for bottled water, she would like to see what can be done to reduce not only the city’s carbon footprint, but what savings can be achieved for taxpayers.

Farrell says the city should supply water, but should encourage workers to bring their own container.

The city is looking to buy close to 100 thousand bottles of water for its staff, mostly for emergency services personnel and road and transit crews.

The Chair of the Finance Committee, Alderman Gord Lowe, tells 660News he doesn’t have a problem with the water purchase contract.

Lowe says in the grand scheme of things the purchases are not outrageous and tap water is not always available or appropriate.

He says the city is constantly reviewing its operations, and when possible, implementing changes to green things up.
