Beating victim identified

A man savagely beaten in the Beltline area of the city late Wednesday night apparently moved to Canada to escape violence in his home country of Colombia.

His son tells a Colombian news agency, John Herrera had moved his family after receiving threats while he was working in the oilfields there.

Herrera was last reported in grave condition.

He was attacked outside his apartment, near 6th Street and 14th Avenue SW, around 11pm Wednesday.

26-year-old Garrett Elliott Lee Smith and 22 year old Jarod Donald Henry face charges in connection with the attack which police believe was random.
