Calgary is growing younger, not older

Calgary is bucking the Canadian trend.
New census numbers show Canada is getting older with a growing seniors population.
But Mayor Naheed Nenshi says Calgary is very lucky because we have a different shaped population pyramid than everyone else.
“We’ve got a large number of small children, and when you have small children you have parents,” explains Nenshi.
“We have a lot of of people in their 20’s, 30’s and early 40’s in the city. So in many ways we are extremely fortunate because that allows us to avoid some of the problems of an aging population faced in other places.”
Nenshi is quick to add the younger population isn’t without challenges including what he refers too as the suburban subsidy; young couples having to move to the outskirts of the city to find affordable homes.
