Wellsite cleanup in Northern Alberta underway

A Calgary-based oil and gas company says they’ve been able to clean up about one-sixth of the oil and water that spilled at a site in Northern Alberta earlier this month.

Pace Oil and Gas says about 3500 cubic metres of the oil and water leaked from a site well southeast of Rainbow Lake.

As of Tuesday, the company says almost 600 cubic metres have been cleaned up and that about 70 percent of it is water, the rest is oil.

President Fred Woods tells 660News, their goal now is to ensure everyone they have the situation under control.

He says “we will try to keep an open communication and keep everyone current on where we’re at and where we’re going with it and the crew up there is experienced so we are definitely on top of it.”

A camp of about 50 workers is being established to continue with the clean-up and Woods says they are a top notch group with experience dealing with situations like this and they have every confidence in them.

Rainbow Lake is about 918 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
