Drumheller’s first DinoFest

In the words of Jimmy Walker, it promises to be a “dyno-mite” weekend in Drumheller, the town 90 minutes east of Calgary, which is holding its first annual DinoFest.
“The first time, can you believe it?,” muses Jim Barr, a spokesman for the event. “Drumheller’s never had a dinosaur festival. But they will this weekend. You know they tell you, you’ve got to have your one thing. And when you look and think about Drumheller, what is it? It’s dinosaurs! So why not celebrate it?”
It might be a first for the town, but there’s no lack of interest in the event.
“Through April and May,” adds Barr, “their Facebook page for DinoFest has been talking of 414,000 people, in the last two weeks, ramping up to the festival.”
It’s safe to say that over 400,000 dinosaur enthusiasts aren’t likely to head Drumheller, this weekend, but for those who do, there will be no lack of activities including special programming at the Royal Tyrrell Museum.
“They’ve got … fossil safaris going on,” says Barr. “They’ve got special presentations from paleontologists. There’s a big dinosaur scavenger hunt that you participate” (in). “And a walk on experience with a Nickelodeon television show called Dinosaur Dan.”
In addition, there’s plenty of activities for children at the town’s spray park, the site of a main stage featuring nine bands.
Saturday night, a three storey high screen — with a giant dinosaur perched atop of it — will feature a free showing of Jurassic Park II.
