SAIT is trying to help the province avoid another labour shortage.
The school is launching a new apprenticeship program that will allow students to spend less time on campus and more time making money on a worksite.
SAIT’s Gord Nixon says the new program will emphasize online learning.
“If (students) have any questions when they’re going through this online program we have them in contact with instructors by e-mail or telephone, so they have lots and lots of support. We’ve built lots of interactivity into the online course, so it’s not just an electronic page turner,” said Nixon.
With the online learning, students in the electrical, plumbing and welding trades can shorten their time at SAIT from eight weeks down to two weeks.
