AFL rally outside Calgary MP’s office

A torn paycheque was a major symbol of a labour protest outside the constituency office of the federal immigration minister.
Members of the Alberta Federation of Labour rallied outside Jason Kenney’s office in southeast Calgary to voice their anger about changes to the temporary foreign workers program.
AFL President Gil McGowan says Ottawa is making it easier for companies to hire foreign workers and pay them as much as 15 per cent less than other full time workers.
“We really want people to know about the changes to the program and how these changes are going to affect ordinary Albertans especially when it comes to suppressing wages, in an economy when the last thing we should be talking about is suppressing wages,” said McGowan.
He says if the government doesn’t reverse its overhaul of the foreign workers program we are gong to see big battles between union and non union operations in the oilsands.
