Critics are calling for more pipeline inspection

Critics of the Alberta oilsands fear the damage may have already been done after this latest oilspill and are calling for an increase in pipeline inspections.
Greenpeace Climate and Energy Campaigner Mike Hudema tells 660News the damage has already been done to the Central Alberta ecosystem.
He’s calling for a stop to new pipelines until changes and upgrades can be made to the existing infrastructure.
Hudema says he’s shocked the company could release 1,000 to 3,000 barrels of light sour crude without even noticing into a tributary of the Red Deer river.
“This is a company that has been plagued by the problems but they are not the only one,” he says. “Just last month we had another major spill in Alberta so something is definitely wrong.”
Green Party leader Elizabeth May fears it may be too late and wants changes made to the existing laws.
“I don’t think we’re paying adequate attention to what happens in real life versus what happens in the fossil fuel wonderland where everything goes wrong,” she says.
May says Canadians have been fed excuses for far too long about the industry knowing what it’s doing and adds a much better job needs to be done.
