Severance packages costing taxpayers big time

Spending watchdogs are barking at the federal government over severance payouts.
Millions of taxpayer dollars are going to employees who are quitting on their own, retiring, or even keeping their jobs.
The National Post reports last year, $1.2-billion was doled out to just under 92,000 federal employees.
Under current union contracts, employees are allowed to accumulate severance benefits for resignations, retirements and layoffs, though Ottawa is currently renegotiating those contracts to eliminate the perk.
