Shell Canada has pleaded guilty to releasing a toxic substance into the Peace River.
The energy giant, which has an oilsands facility near the river, will pay a fine of $225,000.
Almost all of that will go into a fund to conserve and protect fish habitat in the Peace River.
Shell was charged after it accidentally released more than 12,000 litres of a chemical used to remove oxygen from water.
A company spokesman said Shell employees patrolled the river immediately after and didn’t find and dead fish.
A consultant hired by Shell concluded that the release didn’t harm the long-term viability of fish habitat in the Peace.
