A popular weekend rural escape re-opens to Calgarians this weekend.
According to Manager Carmen Ditzler, the Millarville Farmer’s Market — which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this weekend — draws about 60 per cent of its customers from Calgary.
“You have this really great drive with the mountain views through the rural landscape where the food actually comes from,” says Ditzler, trying to explain the popularity of the rural getaway with Calgarians. “And it’s still close to the city. So from the southwest corner of Calgary it’s still only 20 minutes.”
“As a visitor, you could be reassured that the people who are here do make or bake or grow their own products,” adds Ditzler. So we do have real farmers here. We do have real bakers. We have a ton of artisans and crafts.”
Besides fresh fruits and vegetables, Ditzler says the market offer a wide variety of meats, including chicken, bison, elk, ostrich, lama, pork and of course beef. But there’s more.
“We have cheese makers,” Ditzler continues. “We have bakers. We have jams, jellies, pies, berries, wine, meat, honey, everything you can think of.”
To celebrate the market’s 30th year, a half-marathon has been organized for 7am Saturday, in advance of the market’s 9am opening.
