AHS admin costs spike

Alberta Health Services has hired full-time employees to find cost savings, but those very employees helped contribute to a spike in administration costs last year.

According to financial statements, AHS admin costs jumped 19 per cent for the year ending in March to $364-million.

Overall expenses were also up 8.7 per cent according to The Calgary Herald, though the superboard still ended the year with an $85-million surplus.

A spokesperson says the jumps in cost came mostly because of expanded services and labour costs, along with a one-time insurance payment of $17-million.
