Reflecting on the last armoured car robbery in Calgary

As police across the country scramble to track down the 21-year-old man suspected of murdering his G4S security guard co-workers while they were loading a bank machine on the University of Alberta campus, Calgarians may reflect on the last time a robbery like this happened here.

In 1998, there was an armoured vehicle heist at the CIBC in North Hill Mall, and the robbers were waiting when the Brinks truck arrived around midnight and made their getaway in a Jeep.

After a year-long investigation, two men were charged in the robbery; one was working for Brinks at the time and the other was a former soldier.

Ret. Det. Tom Marriott who worked the case says there were two other employees who helped plan the crime, but they testified against the others to avoid prosecution.

He says it took six months to plan the robbery.

No one was hurt, despite 88 shots being fired during the robbery.
