Popular summertime weekend meeting place opens

One of the more popular weekend attractions in the region opens Saturday for its 30th season.

It’s the Millarvile Farmer’s Market, about a 20 minute drive for southwest Calgary residents.

“We have a ton of artisans and crafts people,” Market Manager Carmen Ditzler tells 660News, explaining the popularity of the farmer’s market. “I think that that’s what also sets us apart is that from the beginning we had a vision to include arts and crafts within our market.  And it just adds to the diversity.”

“As a visitor you can be reassured that the people who are here do make or bake or grow their own products,” adds Ditzler. “You can also buy pretty much any kind of meat that you could think of here, anywhere from chicken to ostrich including lama, bison, elk, pork, beef of course.”

Many of the visitors to the Millarville Farmer’s Market make the drive out from Calgary.

“My estimate would be that about 60 per cent of our visitors come from Calgary,” notes Ditzler who says one other added bonus for city folk visiting the rural market is the drive which features the majestic Canadian Rockies in the distance. “Later on in the morning is when the visitors from Calgary tend to get here.  You know, we’re all busy.  We commute.  We’re working hard.  So last year we extended the hours to go till two.”
